Babachir Lawal Slams Federal Infrastructure Claims, Warns of Political Fallout in the North

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has openly dismissed federal assertions of widespread infrastructure development in Northern Nigeria. He described the projects as invisible, suggesting they exist only “in imagination” and not on the ground.

Backing former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso—who previously criticized the Tinubu-led administration for marginalizing the region—Lawal voiced strong support, pointing to Kwankwaso’s engineering background as proof of his credibility.

“There’s no visible construction, no federal projects. And it’s not just Kwankwaso saying this—any honest observer can see the North is being left behind,” Lawal said during a Trust TV interview.

He accused the government of not only neglecting the North but also undoing previous developmental gains. Lawal warned that if this trend continues, it could severely damage the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s political standing in the North ahead of the next general elections.

In response, the federal government dismissed the accusations, asserting that major infrastructure projects are underway and that Kwankwaso’s statements are an attempt to mislead the Northern populace.
